In-Country/In-Region Scholarships at University of the Western Cape

German Academic Exchange Service or Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), in close collaboration with the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), is proud to announce the In-Country/In-Region scholarships at University of the Western Cape. The scholarships are available at the Institute for Land, Poverty and Agrarian Studies, University of the Western Cape. Residents of any African country are eligible to apply!

The In-Country/In-Region scholarships at University of the Western Cape, which are called “Strengthening Advisory Capacities for Land Governance in Africa” program intend to fund postgraduate students within the Network of Excellence for Land Governance in Africa. This program is intended to promote good land governance by establishing institutional and human capacities for the implementation of sustainable along with development-oriented land policy in Africa. Graduates from Africa who hold a first academic degree and wish to pursue their master’s degree in their home countries are all welcome to apply for this call.

This award program supports program studies in subjects areas that have strong relevance to land governance. The awards at PLASS are open for the following master’s program: Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies and are tenable at the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town. Generally speaking, they are for a two year master’s program which usually commences in February 2019.

Requirements

  • Candidates must have successfully finished normally a three year university degree with above average results (upper forth of class)
  • Candidates must be able to show strong commitment and motivation
  • Candidates must possess thorough knowledge of the language instruction
  • Candidates must have finished their last university degree no more than six years ago at the time of application
  • Candidates must be nationals or permanent residents of any African countries
  • Normally, candidates must be staff member of a public institute/university, ones who are considered for teaching or research staff recruitment, or those who are from the public sector

Note that, female applicants and those coming from less privileged regions or groups are encouraged to apply for this call. The awards are initially granted for one year. However, scholars can ask for extension provided they have demonstrated satisfactory progress.

Application process

Application for In-Country/In-Region scholarships at University of the Western Cape contains two steps:

  • Apply to study at PLAAS using the method and contacts provided by the institution.
  • If you are shortlisted, you will be given the link to the DAAD-Portal by PLAAS.

Please complete your application before December 14, 2018 by submitting these documents:

  • DAAD application form which must be duly filled and is attainable on the DAAD online portal
  • A CV which must be hand signed and use the European specimen form here. Please include a list of publications if any
  • A recommendation letter issued by university teachers (Master: 1)
  • A letter of admission issued by the host institution, network or university
  • Certified copies of your university degrees plus transcripts
  • Copy of passport
  • A letter of motivation
