The Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Culture was established in 1999 through the generosity of Sir Robert and Lady Sainsbury as a way to promote understanding and knowledge of Japanese cultures and arts. The Institute has formulated a renewed mission statement in its second decade, which not only reflects the benefactors’ intentions and is grounded in their original vision, but also intends to expand its intellectual horizons. The mission of the Institute is to promote world class research as well as be a leader in the study of Japanese cultures and arts.

In 2000, the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellowship program was established through funding from Lord Sainsbury of Turville. It is designed to strengthen academic ties with Japanese studies program in Canada, Asia, Oceania, Europe and the USA. This scheme provides recipients with an opportunity to work in a scholarly environment conducive to creating a publication project.
