Allan Gray Orbis Fellowship for South African Students

Up to 100 fellowships are offered by the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation this year. The program aims to support outstanding and deserving South African students who otherwise couldn’t fund their studies without the scholarship. Both current Matric and University students are all welcome to apply for the Allan Gray Orbis fellowship for South African students if interested!



The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation was formed by Allan Gray in 2005 as a way to establish a sustainable contribution to South Africa. The Foundation aims to help students who have a passion for entrepreneurship and are future entrepreneurs themselves. The Foundation created the Allan Gray Orbis fellowship program in order to provide financial support for excellent students to study at university level, along with providing development and support for those who show an entrepreneurial mindset.

This year, the Allan Gray Orbis fellowship for South African students is open for applications. The eligible programs are as follows:

  • Health Science, not including Dentistry, Medicine and Veterinary Science
  • Humanities
  • Science
  • Commerce
  • Law
  • Engineering

The scholarship will cover tuition fees, accommodation, meals, prescribed books, monthly living stipend, and tutor allowance. The award will also provide qualified students with academic support, mentorship as well as access to an entrepreneurial and personal development program.

Matric candidates: shortlisted applicants will be notified and required to attend a face-to-face interview (takes place June/July 2019). Students will also be required to attend the Selection Camp in September 2019.

University students (first and second year): more details will be available soon.

Eligibility criteria:

  • South African citizens (or citizens of Swaziland, Namibia or Botswana)
  • Studying or in the case of matric students, intend to study towards one of the aforementioned fields at one of these institutions: University of the Witwatersrand/ University of Johannesburg/ University of the Western Cape/ Stellenbosch University/ TSIBA (2nd year intake)/ University of KwaZulu-Natal/ University of the Free State / University of Pretoria/ University of Cape Town/ Rhodes University/ Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
  • Strong leadership qualities/ entrepreneurially-minded
  • Matric candidates:
  • Under 21 years of age in 2019
  • Current matric students
  • Achieved at last level 5 for Maths HG in grade 11 finals and at least overall average of level 6 in grade 11 finals, not including Life Orientation
  • Completed the National Benchmark test by September 30, 2019
  • University students (first and second year):
  • Under 22 years old for 1st year students and 23 years old for 2nd year students (in 2019)
  • Finished matric
  • 1st year: achieved at least overall average of 65% for June 2019 exams
  • 2nd year: achieved at last overall average of 65% for June 2018 and 2019 exams

  • Certified copy of ID, grade 10, and 11 final academic record and 12 latest academic record
  • Passport size photo
  • Reference from an educator (signed, stamped and sealed in a separate envelope)
  • Academic/extracurricular/recognition awards received in Grade 12, 11 or 10 (certified copy)
