 RMIT University

RMIT University

RMIT was established in 1887 and is known as one of the leading public research university in Australia. Located in Melbourne, the University started out as a night school which offered classes in technology, science and art that began as a response to the ongoing industrial revolution at the time. This higher educational institution is also famous for being a global university of design, technology and enterprise. The University offers a wide array of courses in different programs. As a matter of fact, RMIT is the biggest dual-sector education provided in the country.

This year, up to two PhD scholarships at RMIT University are offered for outstanding students wishing to undertake their graduate research in Australia. Students who are interested in pursuing cutting-edge research in exploring how tumours in the lung promote a local inflammatory response which actually benefits cancer spread and growth. The aim of the scholarship is to provide financial support so that students will not need to struggle to fulfil financial obligations. That way, they can dedicate their time fully to understand this process at a molecular and cellular level. The end result is to develop targeted strategies to get rid of tumour supporting inflammation.

This project is actually part of an NHMRC project award intended to develop novel therapeutic strategies to inhibit tumour stimulating inflammation in lung cancer, thereby allowing for hope for many incurable lung cancer patients. The PhD project itself will specifically focus on developing new drugs in order to treat incurable lung cancer, which is known as a leading cause of cancer deaths. Students will focus on investigating how lung cancers hijack the body’s immune system to promote tumour spread and growth. This project will also focus on innovating ways of targeting inflammation in lung cancer.
